In all likeliness you recognize this symbol, but have you ever wondered where it comes form? These pointing hands are called manicules, and I wanted to create a cocktail named after it and other forgotten typographic symbols.

Brief

Lost Type is a zine collaboration between professional bartender Trevor Thorpe and myself. It started out as an essay about some of the fascinating and forgotten typographic symbols that have fallen out of use. I wanted to find a way to bring those glyphs and their names back into the modern era, or at least pay homage to them. I approached Trevor with my concept of creating cocktails named after these old symbols and he immediately became inspired. I decided on the names and general directions for the five drinks, and Trevor took care of their recipes and garnish. Once they were ready I pulled some props and backdrops together and we had a photoshoot in his bar. I then personally combined those photos, recipes and my original essay into a 16 page zine. Please enjoy these cocktails while reading about the enigmatic history of typographic symbols.
